MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Possible engine idea ... Audi V8?

Idea. One engine that I think might fit just fine in the MGB, and it's a stonker, is an Audi 4.2L V8, which puts out 300bhp in standard trim, or 340 in S6/S8 trim. DOHC but much more compact than, say, a Lexus or Mercedes V8. I don't know the weight of the lump, but it's an alloy block with alloy heads. Redline is almost 7K. Anyone ever thought about trying one in an MG? (Didn't someone in OZ successfully transplant a Lexus 4.3L V8 into an MG, btw?)

It would, I think, just be nice to figure out an OHC motor for the MGB so that one had an actual sports car on one's hands. Don't get me wrong, I loved my old Rover 4.2L setup -- which the taxman unfortunately made me sell -- but the thing just didn't quite have a sporty, revvy feel.

Got any dimensions on that motor.. As always the size is the usual limitation..

David,
There was indeed a Lexus motor slotted into a B by someone here and much discussion appeared about it on this forum if my memory serves.
I may be wrong but it was I am fairly certain the 4.0 version which measured conveniently 700 mm cube.

The Audi V8 sound like it has much to commend it altough the "no substitue" brigade may well decry the fact it IS a revver not a stump puller.

Cheers , Pete

Hye I am a 302 luver (stump puller I would guess) but there is nothing like a well set-up high revving car. In fact they tend to "sing" to you more and for better or worse draw you into running them hard more often for the pure joy of hearing them...

IS a reaso I would like to try a rotary in a B one of these days...
Larry Embrey

Any idea what an engine like that would go for $$$ in either a crate example or as a wreck?
Michael S. Domanowski

Sounds from the specs that it would be a good runner, but there are so many other factors to consider when selecting a power plant. If the Audi doesn't come with a reasonably sized manual transmission then that could be a drawback. Also, modern engines with electronic controls are a real pain to work with for the average builder. Want that 'revvy' feel, lighten the flywheel on your Rover.

FYI: the Lexus motor - (Which I hope to be installing as soon as I finish my shed), the 4.3L Lexus motor is a stroked version of the 4.0L (no change to external engine dimensions)
