MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Proper MG??? not any more

Any one else out there having problems with the jokers. i have bought parts form them for several years, most recent i purchased a set of uprated b shocks last Sept, i sent in my excellent cores and they were received and signed for on OCt 3, 2002, to date i have phoned them 4 times, at my cost, funny that customer service requires non toll free, am told same line that things are busy, to date no refund has been given, BUYER BEWARE, looks like another mg supplier might be biting the dust, jim
jim m

It took me nearly a year to get the credit for shocks and king pins from them!

They acted like they wanted to forget about the cores and I had to jump through hoops and be very, very persistent to get me refund.

I can no longer do business with them because of their lack of concern for their customers.
Michael Wish

michael, 1 year??, i see what i have to look forward to, i would never do business with them again either. i would also discourage anyone else from here to, jim

Hi Mike! Jim, I also had problems with Proper MG. I used to buy from them regularly. I ordered a MGC fiberglass hood from them. It was battered as if it had been thrown around a while. It was packed well so I knew it wasn't the shippers fault. After finding out it had a serious distortion in the construction at the back edge of the hood I contacted them and they sort of sluffed me off by saying that was the only one they had. It could not have been fixed without totally removing about 6 inch wide strip all the way across the hood and relaying the glass. I contacted them about it again. I was directed to someone else who might have been the owner. First he ask me about my experience with fiberglass and body work and talked down at me. I told them I have been restoring cars since 1970 and have used plenty of glass panels and components. He blew me off saying that that was normal with fiberglass components. I indicated to him he was full of it. I suspect they had sold this hood several times and was looking for someone to lay it on. I told them if that is the way they did business then they won't need mine. Dann

I haven't had any bad experience with these guys as far as parts go (prices seem to be ok) but they do exude a real arrogance on the phone. Can't quite put my finger on it but I have a feeling they drive BMW's....
Dale

mike, dann, dale, arrogance, that is an understatement, i made my required monthly call to them yesterday to find out about my refund. i was told that they had deleted my name from there customer mailing list, yes at my request, and thus had no record at all that i ever purchased shocks from them or returned cores to them. i was told that someone from there "customer service" department would be calling back. not holding my breath. i am sure that they will now try and never make a refund. i told the salesman i spoke with on the phone in clear non distressed simple terms what poor business prctices these are and how disappointed i am, he was response was nothing, no apology at all. so i have contatcted my bank and am having them back out the entire amount for the purchase of the shocks in the first place, bet it won't take long for them to find the missing records after they take the money out of their account, jim

I've ordered from the Proper MG for several years, parts for all three of my MGs. I have noticed the arrogance on the phone, for sure. But I have NEVER had any difficulty in correcting problems (the sent incorrect floor pans for my GT...issued a UPS pickup and sent proper one in a very timely manner)...and have credited my VISA in a timely manner for core charges on shocks, etc.

Their prices are reasonable...I truly hate hearing that they may have changed their business ethic. rick

I ordered a OEM style carpet set for my BGT a year and a half ago. To this day, they have not provided the front mats.I got one excuse after another. They swapped out the matts from a "Delux" set and did not even mention what they had done. I guess they expected me not to notice the difference in quality and color. When I called them, they admitted doing it after I pen them down. I gave up trying to get things made right.
Go to http://community.webshots.com/album/25388500iNEtUPjNGi and look at pics 12 and 13 and see if you would have noticed the difference!
gerry masterman

gerry, i checked out your pictures, that is amazing that they would send something that wrong and not correct it. how do these jokers stay in business? only thing i can say is lest keep posting and hopefully they will get the message.
jim m

Gerry, what color is that car? Is it Teal Blue? I really, really like that color ... haven't seen it on many GTs. Do tell.
Terrence

Terrence, yep, teal blue. I do have to say that the carpets that I got were excellent quality, except for the offending floormats, which were crap. I did finally get the mats that came with the kit, but they were for a right hand drive car. That is why they subed the crappy ones. The thing that bothered me is that they did not even bother to tell me what they had done until I approached them weeks later. Then they told me they backordered the right mats. After a year of calling or emailing them every month I gave up. Shame, because they have some nice prices and some nice products, but they just are not worth the risk

On this subject, here is a post from a current Ebay auction item.

NEW MGB or MGC 1969 seat rebuild kit

I have a NEW set of seat covers for a 1969 MGB or MGC, roadster or GT(front only), in black vinyl with red piping. Made in England. Also included is the seat rebuilding kit that has the seat foams, backing board, and elastic webbing. These were purchased from The Proper MG, kits number SRK002 ($147.50), and SC107AM ($209.50). These are nice quality. They do not include the headrests covers. Use the "Buy it Now" and shipping is free. Save yourself some dough!

I would not be selling these except for the very poor customer service and the loss of my money I encountered at The Proper MG. I special ordered the headrest covers to match the seat kit back in November. I was told 4 to 6 weeks. On Jan. 3rd, I emailed them asking status of my order since it had been 7 weeks. Their reply was that they did not gaurantee the 4 to 6 weeks and that they did not believe the covers would be on the shipment due at the end of this month. They thought it would be probably be the end of next month (14 to 16 weeks). I asked them to confirm this so I could go have a local shop do the covers for me as this time frame was unacceptable. NEVER heard from them again. On Jan. 9th, they charged my credit card $24.50. I called them thinking OK, my covers are on the way. NO. This was just a deposit. A deposit on something I ordered 2 months ago? Yes. They agreed to cancel the order and credit my account. I called back the next day to check on the status of the credit to my charge card since it had not been made yet, and the customer service rep hung up on me just for asking ( I know I can be a jerk sometimes but this is one time I was not). WOW!!! I called back and was told that I would not get a credit if he could not stop the order. OK, I said that if I could not stop the order, then send me the covers when they come in anyway. I was told that he "WOULD NOT FILL THE ORDER FOR ME BECAUSE CUSTOMERS LIKE ME (apparently ones willing to give up credit card numbers and care about what get charged on them), THEY DO NOT NEED!".

So, the morale of this story is I will not use this stuff. There are matching covers on the way, someday, that you can probably get from them (I do not recommend them). Sure, you may have used them and been happy with them. Go ahead take your chances. Oh yeah, they never did give me a credit for the $24.50.

PLEASE DO NOT USE EBAY CHECKOUT WHEN THE AUCTION ENDS.

BTW, not my Ebay ad.

david, i checked out the listing, i know exactly how the fellow felt, it is astounding to see a business with good products and fair pricing behave in this manner, buyer beware, jim

The NOT SO Proper MG! Here is my tale: 1969 MGB headrest covers. I would not be selling these except for the very poor customer service, and the loss of my money I encountered at the Proper MG. Joe Blackwood

Just when trashing The Proper MG seemed like the thing to do, I looked at my credit card account today and found that they had placed a credit of $24.50 on it! This was for the headrest deposit they charged me. It must have been either my sweet disposition or my extensive knowledge and use of slang names that got it back for me! Hope you all have luck with them.
Joe Blackwood

Too bad about what seems to be going on at Proper MG. I don't like spreading hearsay/rumors, but I also don't like losing my money. Therefore, I've noted what's being reported in this discussion and passed the information on to two friends who also own MGBs. And they told two friends, and so on, and so on.

update for everyone___ i received an email from the proper mg yesterday, seems that it is my fault according to them they i have not received a refund, here is the latest version on events according to them, they said " we have spent sevral hours digging through our bin of cardboard to be recycled in order to find the original box in which your cores came to us, we were successful earlier this week so at least we can verify that we did receive a package from you marked core return." they further went on to say that i had no documentation in the box , which is absolutely incorrect. soooo, let me step back and look at this, a merchant receives my return, properly marked and labeled as per their instructions, in the same box the original item was shipped in and containing all the same documents that the original item came to me with and also having my name, address and phone on the return label. in stead of taking out the cores, and processing the return on my cc they take out the cores, promptly send them off to their supplieer for a refund, and toss my box and enclosed info in the recycle bin. now does that seem odd to anyone? i would think that if the story about no papers were true you would look at the return ups label which includes my phone number and get it straight, not this vendor, mind you this was almost 4 months ago now. the proper mg sent this email to me and at the end stated "that you realize this whole unfortunate situation was caused by nothing more than a simple lack of proper documentation." my response is and was " hogwash, this situation is and was caused by your lack of controls and quality assurance, coupled with severe denial of your manners in handling customer service issues, as i stated in my response to you, i have filed the forms to have my bank back out the charges from my check card, this should resolve it from my end, good luck with your business in the future and i hope you figure it out sooner than later, jim
jim m

Wow! I can't imagine a company accumulating cardboard for 4 months. Very dedicated recyclers, I'd have to say. Perhaps they're investing in cardboard "futures". I think I'll start saving.
Derek Nicholson

Off on a tangent, here, but I got several free alternators from a local retailer because the people who returned them did not keep the boxes. Seems that the rebuilder will not accept them as cores without the original box. Sounds dumb to me, but I guess that the rebuilder cannot figure out what the alternator is without the box lable to go by.
gerry masterman

The only reason that I was able to get mine back was to have UPS give me the name of the person in the shop that signed for the cores. It still took more than 2 months after that to get my refund.
Michael wish

the story wiht these fellows gets almost laughable by the day. got a refund slip in the mail yesterday from them, only one problem!!! the gave me back my core amount less 25%, which they claimed they were entitled to because they had to "search" their records to find my info. i phoned there customer service number yesterday and spoke with a fellow named charles. when i asked him if i could speak with the owner on the firm he told me he did not know who was the owner, he said he had a supervisor named "ed" who would call me back, still not holding my breath. he said he did not know who ed's supervisor was and than he stated that they were owned by phoenix distributors in the uk, but he did not know anyone there or have any contact info on them. simply amazing place to do business with, BUYERS BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!
