MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - propshaft

Hello all,
I am doing a V8 conversion on a 1976 mgb gt. I am using a 3.5 efi engine from a range rover and an sd1 5 speed gearbox. The question is what propshaft to use?? I am trying to retain the original axel, but obviously the old prop. is not suitable.
Can I use an sd1 prop. or do I have to buy a V8 one?

Dave at V8 Conversions (01689) 858716 or B Hive sell a modified prop for the job. SDI one end - MGB the other.

The guy that made my drive shaft did a beautiful job and can custom make yours for a good price. His name is Scott Spangler and his number is 704 - 484 - 0413 and web site www.cmperformanceproducts.com

You can see my car at www.rebornco.com/mgbv8/newmgbv8.htm

Ricky,

You can also get the prop direct from GKN http://www.gkndriveline.co.uk/ just tell them what gearbox flange and axle flange you have and the distance between the flanges and they will make it up in a few days. Cost about £150.

Talk to Clive Wheatley - he has them made up by the people who do TVR shafts - can do the same OD as the standard tube but thicker walled - no clearance issues.

Hi there

I used a prophaft from a Rover P6 in my MGB with a SD1 box and standard rear axle.
I wonder why this is never mentioned as an option, it has exactely the right length, is strong enough to handle the torque and I only had to do some machining on the rear flange and redrill the holes.
In the Uk it should be no problem to find an axle and this would certainly be a cheap option.

Take Chris's advice - as he says Clive can supply one with the same OD as the standard tube but with thicker walls.

Also have it balanced, if that's not part of the standard offering.

GKN were brilliant (and not expensive) They even fitted grease nipples so I have got another little winter job !!

I also used the propshaft from a Rover P6. I took the rear flange from the Rover shaft & a flange from the MG shaft & had the Rover flange re drilled to mate with the MG diff flange. I also found the length was just right. My car is a '78 so it should be right for yours too. Barrie E
