MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Rover 5 Speed gearbox and reverse light switch

I have had a problem with the reverse light switch on my 5-speed Rover gearbox in that it doesn't come on. If I select reverse the switch will only close the contacts if the gear lever is pushed another centimeter or so. I asked a local mechanic to take a look and he got hold of another switch, the problem with this one is it screws in too far and although the rerverse lights come on you can no longer put it in reverse. The mechanic is a bit stuck and says the switch needs a longer 'plunger' so that the gear lever will make contact with it sooner.

Has anyone had this issue before and is there a specific part I need? Any links or pointers would be helpful.

Thanks

You might talk to Rimmers in Lincoln - their tech advice is always helpful.

The correct way to fit the switch is to engage reverse, then screw the switch in untill it makes contact ie. the lights come on. then tighten the lock nut, to prevent the switch from moving. If you just wind the switch in all the way, you will not be able to select reverse, as you have found!

I have just had a look myself and I can see the switch if I remove the gaiter etc. He hasn't connected the wires as I assume since he knew there was a prolem he didn't bother. Problem is I can't select 4th gear now either.....

I will take it back on monday and pass on your suggestions. I hope he can sort it out as I need to use in in the week....

Thanks

I had a problem with 4th gear section once, which was simply caused by the gaiter getting jammed between the lever and the gearbox tunnel.

The 4th gear issue I posted was rubbish, it was me being an idiot... apologies.

The issue with the switch is still here though. I contacted Rimmers and they suggested the part 'TKC6761' that they posted very quickly after me ordering it (thanks). I still have the problem with this switch though. The mechanic that has been looking at it says the 'plunger' on the switch needs to be longer; Rimmers say there aren't any others available so I am bit stuck.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks
