MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Rover V8 flywheels

Quick question for someone that knows rover flywheels
and clutch parts. I purchased an engine out of a 78 land rover. The truck was a standard and I have the
flywheel and clutch. Should I use what I have now
or purchase a tr8 flywheel and use that set up. Or will I be alright with what I have now. I guess what Im asking is has anyone used the rover flywheel and is ther any dissadvantages. Im using an early buick bellhousing and a t5 trainy. Any informed answer is appriciated.

Steve I used the flywheel from a Range Rover. In it's standard form, it's far too heavy for an MGB. From memory ,I had about 3/8"-1/2" milled off the face. Then you can have it drilled & tapped to suit the clutch pressure plate of your choice. I went for a Ford 9.5", much cheaper than Rover & more available. Can't help with the bellhousing as I used a Toyota 5 speed tranny. HTHs Barri E

Barrie,

What was the weight you ended up with? Any other thoughts on flywheel weight out there?

Kelly, I couldn't tell you the weight, but it did end up with the same dimensions as the oe flywheel on the factory MGB GT V8. These dimensions are in the MGB V8 maint.man. supplement. The specs are :- min. thickness 1.155". Barrie E

Do you have to mill off metal out of all original flywheels? I have a 2000 engine and flywheel. Should I go ahead and have mine milled also? Also are there any flywheels out there that would work standard that you know of?
Thanks

2000 Discoverys only came with a 4 speed automatic transmission. I'm not sure as to the applicability of that flywheel with a manual transmission.

All of the major V8 suppliers have lightened flywheels (around 22 lbs) and during my V8 conversion I made it a point to make purchases from all of them (spread the wealth through the community to help everyone thrive) and I can tell you without a doubt that everyone I dealt with was GREAT, and I would have no reserves about purchasing from them again.

Suppliers I used AND recommend include:
D & D Fabrications
Glenn Towery
T & S imported automotive
The MG guys
Rimmer bros (in the UK)

All were courteous, EXTREMELY helpful, prices were fair, and quality was as expected.

Back to the point, a new flywheel will set you back in the vicinity of 225 bucks. What's your time worth to you?
