MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - running the V on liquid gas

where can I find advice ?
Paul Hague

I assume you are refering to Liquified Natural Gas. Various systems are available in the States for running on Propane or Butane and probably are in GB. Most of these are used by agricultural equipment, as the tax is less on these products than on Petrol. Check the net for agricultural applications and manufacturers.

Also check the distributors of LPG in your area for information. Most LPG delivery vehicles in the U.S. are powered with LPG.

RPI Engineering knows tons about this -- they seem to imply that LNG is a really viable alternative with the V8. I'd confer with them.

Where would you put the gas tank ? The boot/trunk is already cramped.

I have dealings with a pair of Range Rovers running LPG with real cost benefits. One I have recently fitted a pair of Pete Burgess modified (His Econotune spec) heads that have more than compensated for the slight loss of power that comes with LPG. In fact the whole engine efficiency has improved even more so the cost benefits have improved even more so that it will not be too long before the extra savings actually cover the cost of heads and fitting and start paying back even more.

The best source of LPG info is via Land Roiver circles as these cars shout for the LPG as they can carry the tanks, and benefit greatly from the conversion.

Hi,

I've run a Rover V8 for about 5 years on LPG, the system is dedicated i.e. no petrol system left in the car.

LPG is a great fuel for a number of reasons. The cost is less, being a gas it mixes well with the incoming air in the manifold - no petrol 'puddling' at low temps. LPG is clean burning with the result of fewer harmful emissions, also fewer contaminants in the engine oil. The throttle response on LPG is very good.

LPG can tolerate higer than normal compression, usually in the order of 10-13:1.

My engine is a 5 litre V8 with standard sized valves, some clean up work on the ports, 10:1 CR and a fast road LPG camshaft. It produces 220HP at the wheels at 4800rpm.

Paul,

In Holland a lot of cars run on LPG. I estimate it to be about 10-15%. The price of LPG in Holland is only a third of that of petrol. But road tax for LPG vehicles is a lot higher so it is only economical if you make a lot of km. For classic cars older then 25 years in Holland you don't need to pay road tax so quite a few classic cars have an LPG system and are in daily use. Especially Volvo's and Citroen DS
So in Holland you can find a lot of compagnys who can install LPG systems. Some are specialised in classic cars. Please let me know if you want addresses and i can have a look
Regards
Peter.
