MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - SBF Conversion recommendation
|OK Folks the SBC thread got the SBF discussion going again. It was mentioned about a trans differwence from the Fox to the SN95 cars. I did some research and may very well change my recommended donor parts for the SBF swap. I am awaiting some measurements from a buddy with a 95 cobra, but right now it looks like we can drop the explorer stuff all together and go 100% 94/95 Mustang GT for EVERYTHING, including trans!!|
The trans issue was correct, the sn95 (all 1994 and 1995 mustangs) chassis uses a longer inout shaft on the trans and a differnt bellhousing. that extra length should put the shifter back to almost stock location, as I am about 1.5-2" ahead of stock location. The SN95 GT's use intakes and Distributor that I already know will fit under a stock MGB hood. The SN95 cars also use a shorter front end on the motor than a fox body stang. It may not be quite as short as the explorer, but it uses the same timing cover as an explorer and the pump is the same style but may be a hair longer. That means it should not have clearance issues if you use a pair of 8" puller fans on the radiator in it's STOCK location!! The last unknown is the Accessopry brackets and Alt and how they may or may not fit in the car. I will try to get his brackets since he converted to Fox body water pump set-up.
So, be on the look-out for those wrecked 94/95 mustangs!!
|No kidding? Wow. I may have to start looking for a nice MGB roadster to do a conversion on! NAH!!! But it sure is tempting. What a road burner that'd make. Combine that with Ted's new front end and it is almost a bolt-in. So who's up for producing headers?|

This is getting too easy (Yeah right!) I really like the idea of using a single donor for the drivetrain. Might even find a wreck to donate the axle and driveshaft. Sell the rest for bits and it even makes financial sense.
Jim, What do you know about this new crossmember? Is it made to mount the engine from the crossmember as Larry does?
I'm in the process of building headers for the 302 conversion. I have the driver side done and starting on the passinger. They will be ready for sale early November. I'm not sure yet if they will be offered in stainless steel or just "coated" They are patterened after the RV-8 style header. steve
|UPDATE - I saw some pictures of a 95 cobra. I am affraid those brackets will not work to well, but I have yet to see them in person to get a detailed look. The Explorer brackes seem almost made for our cars, so that may be the only mix/match that has to be done. Yes it is nice to get everythign from one car, and the rear alxe is also a good thing to grab.|
TIP - WHATCH TOW YARD AUCTIONS!! I bought a wrecked 91 LX 5.0 for $385 DELIVERED to my home!! That is a great deal, and all those items are going into my fairmont which is also a fox body car...
I don't think the crossmember has the engine mounts, but I believe they could be easily added. Steve may know more about that.
Any pointers on finding those tow yard auctions?
|Hrmmm there are services out there for like $10/month that you can get them from. Best bet is to whatch the newspaper. There should be a legal notices section. For abandoned vehicles the tow yard has to give proper legal notice that the vehicle will be auctioned off. Here it is usually on Mondays. Same section you will see divorce notifications etc. I found mine about 2hrs before the auction started!!|
CROSS-MEMBER FOLKS! - Hey an idea I had when I was workign on mine was to have the k member drilled and ready to accept bolt on motor mounts. It will take some engineering, but then you could have motor mount assemblies for the different motors, SBF, Rover, V6 etc. Then a person could call up, order the K member and then order the appropriate frameside mounts. Then all they need is the rubber motor mounts and the motor....

What year explorer is best?
|Any 96-01 should be OK, But I know for a fact 96-99 are fine in terms of the front end hardware.|
There is a guy on ebay that sells explorer stuff. I am not sure if he would be willing to break up these front end parts or not though. firstname.lastname@example.org is his Ebay name. Basically you want everything on the front of the motor, except for AC, PS pumps. You CAN get away without the timing cover if you have a 94/95 mustang motor as they share the same timing cover, as does the 91-93 t-bird.
