MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Scoop point frontwards or backwards?

I'm going to put on an aluminum "Hilborn" style hood scoop onto my B. In my case, I'm going to attach it to the hood, rather than the carb. Should it point forwards or backwards? ... I think I understand that forwards may pose a problem, since it gives rise to air flow that's turbulent at speed. Please comment. Car is a 215 with the motor in the standard location.
Dan Fields

Dan, true scoops will point forward. A Cowl induction system will point backwards, typically be shorter and also will end back close to the windshield to taks advantage of the low pressure in that area.
Larry Embrey

In the discussion on bonnet louvres, Roger Parker suggested that the area close to the windscreen is an area of high pressure.

That's my understanding too - and why the heater air vent is there - otherwise air would flow from inside the car out through the vent!!

Dan,
If you face the scoop rearward to collect air from the low pressure area ahead of the windscreen then a look at the Chev Corvette of 1973 to 1976 vintage may be worthwhile.
If you face it forward then even at 100 mph the advatage of increased pressure is about 1.22% which is hardly earth shattering.
One big advatage is the air will be at atmospheric temps not that of the underbonnet are so from that point alone the scoop is probably worthwhile.
The turbulence will be negligible by the way
Something like that used on the early 1960's Ferraris would be my choice but to each their own.
Peter Thomas

I would face it forward, if only because when you're going slowly, the engine bay heat and fumes which will (happily) escape will keep clear of the fresh air intake. No reason to introduce hot, smelly fumes into the interior, if you can help it. Tell us how it looks and/or post a picture! ... those old blower-type scoops sure aren't subtle, but they may actually be one of the best bets as far as period-correctness.
David

Those scoops used to be called "bug catchers", and for good reason. I'd flip it around the other way for sure!
