MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Sebring Body Kit

Okay, I posted this over in technical, but I figured I would post it here as well. I am looking at replacing all 4 wings, as well as the front and rear valence with the Sebring kit (offered by Moss and Proper MG). Anyone installed these parts themselves or would everyone recommend taking it to a body shop and having them do it. Looking at all the rice rocket and other cars with kits in the area, I don't think I have a very reliable shop anywhere near me. I have done body work and fitted body panels on numerous different cars in the past (both steel, and fiberglass) and have done a pretty good job before, I just want everyone's opinion since this is my first foray into an MGB GT body. Thanks all...

Hi DT
Yes I have done it. All the kits I hae seen are for a GT but I fitted mine to a 74 roadster.
You need to cut the rear wings back and bond the sebring wings onto whats left.
Front is different. They are supposedly "bolt on replacements. I was advised at the beginning to graft the sebring arches onto the existing steel wings. I ignored them and it is a lot of work. Doing it again I would graft them on rather than replace the wings. The GT is a lot simpler but I would test fit the sebring wings to see how well they fit before getting rid of the old steel wings.
From your other thread, you appear to be also fitting a V8, (I fitted a Rover 4.2L)lot's of cutting and welding required for the steering linkage on a chrome bumper car.

Don't waste your time and money trying to get the complete front fenders to fit properly. I did the kit on my Rover-powered roadster and the fronts are a real pain to fit. The rears aren't as bad but still a lot of work.

I used the MGOC kit but wished I'd known about www.morspeedperformance.com
which sells just the flares. I gave away a beautiful set of fenders thinking I didn't need them.

I've got lots of pictures if you want to see what the process looks like.

Cheers

Thanks all for the info. I kind of figured it would be easier to graft the flares over the existing wings, I assume the finish will look just as good as with a total replacement? Or would it just be better to ut out, patch the areas, and then graft just flares onto the steel wings? I know it is going to be a ton of work to move the steering linkage which next to opening up the engine bay is going to be the most manpower intensive aspect. Lots of cutting, grinding, welding and massageing of metal...sounds like a good time to me!!

I just posted the same link over on the MGB Technical side before I read this one. They have some good stuff. I do wish they would do an RV8 hood (bonnet), though. ;)

I can't figure out why more people don't use the fender flares from the mid 80's dodge omni? It's smaller than the sebring flare, it fits the MG wheel opening like a glove, it's METAL, and you can buy brand new dodge omni fenders for $50.00 each.

At that point you have a METAL flare, and you can use body adhesive to attach it to your existing metal fenders.

Am I missing something?

Justin,

Do you have any pictures of a 'b with the Omni flares? Maybe people would be lining up to use the Omni idea if they could see what it looks like. Others probably are specifically wanting the Sebring look and wouldn't be interested in anything else. I like the stock look myself, but I do think the Sebring look is neat.

Thank you for the responses. Justin, I am interested in using a metal fender flare (maybe even weld on) but I hadn't found anyone suggesting the Omni as a good donor. Where did you find the fender new for $50? Because if thats the case, and I can find them new for around that price local in VA, I would be all over it.

The first use of the Omni/Horizon flares that I saw was at the '02 British V8 Meet in Grand Rapids. Click on the 2002 Meet link, then look for the red MGB with the gold ralley stripes in the autocross section. Not the best pic. I have seen 2 others since then at Fast Cars. I'll looks for more pics. Great looking flare on an MGB.

Hi

These look intersting.
Were can I get a better picture showing the rear fenders as well?

Thanks

justin, the omni flares are from the rear not the front, you can buy stamped omni front fenders but not rear ones that i have ever found, they are very rare, i spent the better part of 6 months checking web sites and junk yards and never did find them, and even when you do you need good ones from 2 cars. there is a fellow in CA that makes nice looking fiberglass flares for mgb's, i believe his name is steve lilves, do a search on here and his name should come up, they were about $500 for a set of 4, jim
james madson

Steves e-mail address is tgrandek@pacbell.net
The fenders he sells are fiberglass.

Would these work? They certainly look simple.

Also, the rear flares used are from a 4 door Omni or Horizon. I just looked at pic of a 2 door model. Is not even close to being the same.

Hi All

Does anyone know who ownes the car red MGB with the gold ralley stripe mentioned by Carl? Or how I can get ahold of the guy to talk to him about his flares?

Thanks

I have been reading these sebring posts over the years and decided to add my comments.I have had a beautiful set of steel flares for years, full front fenders with rolled beaded edge, and matching half rear fenders. also have the alloy bonnet and front air dam. these were used in the 60's on a scca MGB of dave headlys car.At one time I was going to use them on a MGB v8 conversion.I gathered most of the parts but never got around to getting the project past the collecting the parts part of the resto. If there is any interest I will listen.

Hey wc, email me.

I have pictures of both a GT and a tourer with the Omni flares installed and ready for finsih paint. E-mail me offlist if you want a photo.

Pictures were taken in the small bodyshoppe that Ted Lathrop uses for some of his work. Located outside of Waylon, Michigan.

These are MUCH better than fiberglass...in my opinion.
