MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Share your wheels
I posted the following on another site that handles pictures... I'd appreciate if the folks here would post some pics there as well (or just email them)... URL for the other site is: http://www.britishcarforum.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=162312&an=0&page=0#162312 ================================= I'm trying to decide what wheels to use on my V8 conversion project & am struggling to decide. If you're using something other than standard Rostyle or Wire wheels, please post a picture & note the relevant info (who makes them/contact info, wheel size, offset, tire size, etc.). If you can post a pic that shows how it looks on the car (vs. a close up of the wheel), that'll help the most. I'm looking to see what looks good with rubber vs. chrome bumpers & how they fill out the wheel well &/or what sort of fender flares you used to compliment if you had to adjust clearance. Thanks in advance! Rob |

http://users.chartertn.net/cmfloyd/MGB%20V8.jpg ARE (American Racing Equip.) 14X6. I bought 'em new about 15 years ago. Looked thru the dealer catalog for something that would fit cause MG was not listed. I think they are for the 240-280Z. lost a center cap sometime back so I only use them on the back wheels. Tires are Toyo Proxes RA1s 205/55r-14. |

hello carl, tenn. my car has these same 14" wheels with dana 44 rear end.. would you be running disks on rear?? if so what kinda rear?? i'm havin heck of a time tryin to find disk setup for my rear/14" wheels,,looked at your pic. & had to ask. thank you. |
denny |
Denny, I'm running stock MGB brakes on front & rear. Keep looking, the Dana 44 was used in a lot of cars & trucks. I'm sure there is a rear disk conversion out there somewhere if you really feel you got to have 'em. Gonna cost ya, though. Have you checked with this company? www.stainlesssteelbrakes.com |

Rob . Pics sent, gold wheels don't appeal to all, but I think look great on a green car....to each his own ! Mike |

Panasport makes a minilite replica (8 spoke)in sizes up to at least 18". The US distributor is in CA and they are not real expensive. I currently habe 15 X 5.5 with 195-55 X 15 no rubbing and looks natural. I have heard that you can go up to a 17" wheel with no worries. I'm planning that but will radius the rear wheel well. Good Luck |

Carl, thought that I would find you over here. We need to hit the dragon on the next warm day! |

My wheels are similar to the one above. They are a MINILITE look alike made by ENKEI of Japan. I've had them on the car for 20 years. Gold anodized centers and aluminium outers. |

Hi Mark, Shucks, I already roasted the scales right off that lizard! :) IMO, the gold wheels look great with any darker color. |

We have to head back over there for one more trip before MG2006. Final mapping and all. |

Here is one more currently in the shop. Sorry about the unsteady camera hand. Will take a better picture of the wheels later and put it in place of this one: http://shop.bmcautos.com/images/73BGT34LSFIV6.jpg I really like the wheels. Nice flat appearance and sit pretty well on the car too. -BMC. |

Thanks again everyone... some great pics of great cars (and wheels)! something i forgot to ask... how important is wheel weight -- i know it's unsprung weight, so that may be my only worry... reason i'm asking is other than the minilite style, there are a couple of other wheels I've found that i like, but they all seem to be in the range of 22lbs/wheel in 15x7 & about 24lbs in 15x8... where the minilite styles seem to be in the 15lb range. I'm guessing 14-18lbs extra on the front & rear will be ok, but wanted to get some thoughts from others. Rob |

Robert, I have driven my Roadster, the one with the antracite minilites, with both Rostyles and aluminium wheels. To be honest I haveŽnt noticed any big differences in the way the suspension works with the lighter aluwheels. The greatest improvement comes from better cooling caracteristics on my occational track days. On highspeed cruising, the aluwheels are rock steady all the way to the red line, ie 125mph. Cheers Erik |

24# is a VERY heavy wheel. Will larger wheels also push you into heavier tires? (Or will the tires weigh about the same because they have less sidewall?) I think you're just going to have to get out and drive some cars to decide if you can feel the difference... but consider this: besides being unsprung weight (which is bad), each wheel also acts as a gyroscope. Try this... Take a bicycle wheel and hold it up vertical (one hand on either end of the axle.) Spin it. Observe that any attempt on your part to move the axis is resisted by gyroscopic force. (The faster you spin the wheel, the more you'll feel this phenomenon.) "Polar moment of inertia" is the average distance of the wheel's mass from its center of gravity. At higher RPM, higher-polar-moment wheels/tires on the front of your car will make it physically harder for the car to tuck into turns. Cheers! |

Mike, great addition to this thread... the front of the black GT is real close to the look I'm after in terms of how much flare so details will help me hone in on dimensions I'm after... in particular... - what is the offset on the front wheels - what size tires are on the front - what's the story on the fron flares -- do they come from a donor car (and if so, what year/make/model) or did you custom do them? - anything in your front suspension/brake set up that shifts the wheels in or out vs. stock (& if so, by about how much)? Thanks in advance! Rob |
rficalora |
Robert, The offset on both the front and rear wheels on the black gt is zero. The older style panasports on the rear are more desirable (to me) because they have a wider outside lip than the newer panasports. I believe the newer panasports have a more robust (thicker) center attachment structure. The tires on the black gt are 215X65X15...these tires are way too small but were available to me new so I am using them. This will change soon. The tires on the red gt (with Konig Rewinds)are 245X60X15 and really do fill up the wheel well much better. The sebring wings are fiberglass and were purchased from the "proper mg". When using the glass sebring wings, a person could (and probably should) go to a slightly negative offset on the 15X7 wheel to push the wheels outward and help fill up the wheel well. I'm still searching for a panasport style wheel with this type of offset and mgb bolt pattern. There are no suspension modifications for wheel fitment. Mike |

Mike, try these guysfor panasport style wheels with neg offset http://www.packracingproducts.com/page_wheels.html Tony |

Thanks for the reminder about Pack Racing, Tony. I have talked to Barry over there in the past. As I remember he had a 15X8 with a slight negative offset and they were special order from Australia. (can't remember if it was 4 or 5 lug)I'll give him a call next week to clarify. |
Mike Maloney |
Hi Mike, Keep me updated (tony@batesfamily.net)on your wheel choice. I'm in the middle of a Sebring V8 roadster (74 chrome bumper) project and will be looking for the right size/offset wheels later this year. Regards Tony |

Thanks Mike. That helps a lot. Rob |

I was also looking for new wheels when i put Ted's front susp. on. After seeing a polished Jaguar "teardrop" at a junkyard that was it. specs: 15x7 16.2 lb 5 3/8 backspace 5 x 4 3/4 bolt pattern {chevy & jag} fronts fit w/ 3/4 in spacer rears are a long story $800 /set w/ new centers and rostyle centers snap right in sorry I can't send a pic. don't know how |
robert |
Bill, Looking at the Vert. What if anything did you do width wise on your rear axle to get those wheels under the car without rubbing??? My testing has shown me that on mine I should be able to put that same size tire (width) on all 4 corners. I think I used a 205/60r14 on a stock steel wheel for testing. THe tire you are showing would be 1" taller than stock so I am wondering how that is affecting clearances.. Did you use spacers on the wheels, or have the axle widened to make up for backspacing?? Inquiring minds want to know!! That Vert looks AWESOME!! |
Larry Embrey |
Robert, forgot to tell us about your MGB hub centers. Larry, there is not rubbing. The wheels on the RD are Ford Mustang 5 lug 28mm + offset and longer studs with 1/2 spacers with center machine to fit the axle and hub and tight fit on the studs, front and rear have the correct track dimensions as the B. If you are using a Ford rear end, then have it cut so no need for spacers are needed. I cut my the same as the B so that I could test diferent wheels offsets. |
