MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - ST Air Dam Fitting
I have just purchased a ST Air Dam for my 74 RB. While trying to fit it I realized that the bumper supports flanges are in the way. I can either slot the air dam and fit it around the bumper support flange which means I would have to cut one of the bumper spacing plates in or cut the fiberglass St Air Dam out the same size as the bumper flange. To those of you who have fitted the ST Air Dam with a RB, what did you do? Thanks in advance Bruce |

It's really easy ... just use a Dremel tool and cut holes for the bumper brackets. To preserve strength, I wouldn't cut slots. Just slip the brackets in through the holes and bolt them onto the chassis like you normally would. Also: note that the mold for the S/T air dams is not quite right ... you will almost certainly have to trim the left hand side 1/4" or so at the top if you want it to sit level. It does take some really fettling to get the best possible installation, that doesn't cheapen the look of he car. |

Thanks for reply Ted. I would like to clarify a couple of things if you dont mind. I understand about not cutting slots. I get confused with this line Just slip the brackets in through the holes and bolt them onto the chassis like you normally would. Are you talking about using a Dremel to cut notchs in the ST to fit around the I or H beam (frame) which the bumper support plate is welded too. At that point the bumper and spacer plates would attach normally? Thanks Bruce |

Bruce, doggone me, I believe you have a RB car. I'm not quite sure how it gets rigged. With a CB car, you just drill and elongate holes in the dam such as are in the OE steel valance, and pass the bumper brackets through in just the same fashion. |

Yup, its a RB. Looking at my old steel valance I can see the rectangular holes you are referring to but there are none on my dam, just the hole for air to pass through to the lower rad. Guess Ill have to cut them in, unless some has a better idea??? Bruce |

Bruce ... that's what I'm saying, you have to cut 'em in. Basically just a couple of drill holes joined by messing around w/a Dremel. This is not the hard part. The hard part is getting the fit perfect and level so that it looks good on the car. |
Ted |
Thanks Ted, I understand perfectly now. Bruce |
