MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - switch from LRP advice

My local Shell has stopped selling LRP, confirming the inevitable phase-out has started to occur in my neck of the woods. I know there are some additives you can buy to add to Unleaded. I'd appreciate some advice on what to move onto - what grade of unleaded and whether I need an additive as well. Should I also finish up most of the tank of LRP before switching over?

Thanks, Chris. (Rover 3.5 V8 roadster).
Chris Holmes

You don't need additives, or LRP. The Rover V* will run quite happily on unleaded - no adjustments needed.

And no risk of valve seat recession?
Chris Holmes

No, the alloy head has always had hardened seats. Although Rover won't comment because they never did any tests for recession when the MG version of the engine was current Roger Parker did some research into the materials and found they were exactly the same as would have been used to prevent recession had that been an issue at the time. Mine has done 65k mainly fast motorway miles with no problems.

Sorry Chris, you've been wasting your money buying LRP. Standard unleaded would be fine. Don't worry about mixing the fuels, the car won't notice.
Mike Howlett

Chris,

Mine runs best on Optimax.....I've done a lot of miles using this without any obvious adverse effects.

What about the early 10.5 comp. engines ?

I have a P6 engine which according to Peter Burgess' website is the only Rover engine that may struggle with unleaded. I spoke to my garage about it and they said to give unleaded a go, and if if starts pinking I can always use the castrol additive. I'll experiment later this week.
Chris Holmes

LRP is simply super unleaded with a small amout of anti-recession additive. If it doesn't pink on LRP then it shouldn't on super unleaded, and Optimax is one octane higher anyway i.e. it should be even better, but this is a different issue to recession. On my 4-cylinder Castrols octane boosting additive made no difference at all over the unboosted.
