MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Throwing gravel at it

That's what the primer looked like this morning, like I just stood back and heaved a big gob of mud and rocks at it. Worst primer coat I've ever seen in my life. Still haven't figured out why exactly, too thick, too thin, wrong gun adjustments, bad paint, who knows? Out with the 180 grit, I was honestly tempted to try the air sander but staunchly resisted, and now at the end of the day and with a sore back, it's sitting back in the garage all wet sanded and washed down, ready to tape up for tomorrow. Looks like rain, anybody have any tips for painting during wet weather?
Jim Blackwood

simple - don't !
David

Ditto!

The worst 2 enemies of the painter are humidity and cold. If you have either and are not using a low bake oven/booth then wait til the weather warms up and/or the humidity reduces. Otherwise try hiring oven/booth space or find a very dry spot and use a heaters and spot lights to focus heat.

I got caught once with primer that the shelf life had expired and had the same result. Something percipitaed out of the paint solution that didn't go back in when I shook and stired it. Using material that has laid around your shop is false economy. I could have caught some of the problem if I'd bothered to filter through a strainer instead of mixing it in the cup.

The local Home Depot or paint store will alomost always put your automotive paint on their mixer if you've let it sit a while, but are still under the shelf life.

It used to be that I didn't much care how the primer coat went down rationalizing I was going to sand most of it off anyhow. I find if I use the right speed reducer, fresh material good epoxy primer and lay it down without orangepeel actually saves time in the end

Good luck,

Phil

Jim,
MAN!! Sorry to hear that.. Good to hear you got her blocked back out, but that must have been frustrating!!

It was. The primer was old, false economy, yep, for sure. The base coat went on a little better and I'm about to start the clear so I should finish tonight, but the humidity is really screwing with the masking tape.
