MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Toyota gearbox - How to hook to Smiths speedometer?
Basically, I'm trying to figure out what others have done to use the OEM speedo to other gearboxes. I'm specifically interested in the Toyote Corolla RWD "clamshell" 'box. |

Dellow Engineering in Sydney Australia do conversion kits for Toyota Celica/Supra gearboxes which includes the speedo drive. They might help.I don't know their website but a good search engine should find it for you. Barrie E |

Derek, If you are thinking of the Toyota T-50 "clamshell" version 5 speed (gear case bolts together at top and bottom) it was put behind engines of no greater than 1.6L, about 120hp. I don't think this tranny will hold up to the torque of a V8, and may be taxed to put up with a built 1800. Very good trannies, and small dimensions. Cheers. c. |

Yes, I was thinking of the T-50 a.k.a. the clamshell and only behind an 1800. A friend used to run them in GT-B racing 'Bs in the '70s with no trouble. The trouble is, the '70s being what they were, he's a bit fuzzy about the details. :-) of course, in a racer, they weren't too concerned about a speedo, either. I was hoping that someone would know of some way to hook a Toyota gearbox to a Smiths gearbox. BTW, the Toyota Corolla fanatics figure these boxes are good to 200hp. |

Derek, I reckon if you take the speedo and the gear that fits to the new gearbox and take them into a speedo/gauge shop that they could make a cable up for you. Here in Australia they charge about $50 Aussie, or 25-30 U.S. dollars in your language.HTH Stainzy |
