MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - TR7 tranny

I found a TR7 with tranny in the pick n pull today and was wondering if this is a worthwhile purchase for a V8 conversion. My conversion is a long way off but I'm collecting the bits as I find them. I could probably pick up the tranny for 40 or 50 bucks.
Thanks

Get it. You can't go wrong.

It's only worth something if it's a 5 spd.

Kelly is right. I spoke a little too fast. Hope it is a 5 speed.

That is a strong trans, but there were issues with the oil pump (pressure fed lubrication!). Just go through it and set it up right.
I made an adapter to bolt to the main trans case after removing the bellhousing. The adapter was made to bolt up to "any" GM 4 speed pattern bellhousing.
The input shaft is fairly long, so my 1" thick aluminum adapter worked out fine.
There was a picture of it in one of the V8 Newsletters from about a year ago.

If anyone is interesed, I have a 1980 TR7 5 speed trans which has been sitting in my side yard, yes it's a 5 speed.

You may need a TR8 bellhousing (for a Buick/Rover)

I did the opposite job a few years ago....fitted a used SD1 5-speed to a TR7. I can confirm that the TR7 and SD1 boxes are the same (or at least very similar)and that they are interchangable. The only difference I spotted was that the speedo drive gearing was different.
My understanding is that you'll need a bellhousing from SD1 or TR8, a manual flywheel, clutch actuating arm, slave cylinder, release bearing and carrier, crankshaft spigot and clutch assembly. As ever, the devil is in the detail. If you can source a gearbox with all the bits and pieces, you'll save yourself much effort and expense.
