MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Tranny for Ford 302 V8

Need help in locating a tanny for a Ford 302 to be used in a conversion. I am helping a friend get his conversion done. Looked around at all the local junkyards but the T5 tranny ( Mustang) is not available! Does anyone knows in what car a T5 tranny is used other than Mustang ? What about the GM T5 tranny? Will this fit to a Ford V8 302? Do I need a plate to match these both components?

Werner,

You must use a Ford T-5. The Gm T-5s use a different bolt pattern. Look harder, they are out there. Although, the hotrodders have broken many of them. You may be able to order a new one. Or get a Tremec. They are stronger, but also a bit expensive.
Carl

The transmisions are the same it is the bellhousing that is different.

The transmissions are most certainly NOT the same.

A GM T-5 will not bolt to the Ford bellhousing. The bolt pattern cast into the case of the tranny is different, as is the length of the tailshafts, shifter location, cossmember mounting pad, and speedometer cable drive.

Hey Werner. Try an ad in your local newspaper. I only got 1 call from my ad, but it was a t-5 from a mustang. The guy wanted around $200 for it, but it needed some work. The local junkyards (after giving me a speech about how a MGB can't handle a 3.5) wanted $800!!! A new "Super Duty" T-5 from Summit is $1099. My T-5 came from a Thunderbird Turbo Coupe.

BTW Werner, I'm still scratching my head on the final details of my brake comversion. Maybe i'll get it finished before winter sets in:)

Carl, So you are that other than bellhousing and tail shaft a bog warner T-5 is not a bog warner T-5.
I wonder if you can change the tail shaft and maybe have some work done to the ford bell housing to make up for bold paterns.

I think that the turbocoupe T-5 had a different gear(s) than a regular T-5.

I was just offered a rebuilt Tremec 3550 for about $800, though I really want a new TKO. Deals are out their!
(it also helps to hang out at your local Ford dealership and make new friends)

So I guess I got a good deal when I bought a 302 Mercury Capri for $150,with complete drivetrain.I robbed the tranny and bell, etc.,but the rear is still in the car if anyone is interested. It's a posi, car is a 1985,and not an 8.8".I think it's a 7 1/4" rear?I really don't know.I'm sure it's plenty for a Rover or Buick.Email me if you want it.Cheap!
