MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Upper Radiator Hose

Hello to everyone! I've spend the last year and a half focusing on college (graduating with honors in August!) and just put my engine back IN my car after about 15 months of it sitting next to the car.

Anyway, I need a better looking upper radiator hose. I have rover fuel injection, and a ford falcon radiator. (Not that either of those really matter)

Any suggestions?
Justin

Hi Justin,

I have used these hoses with great success:

I'll second what Pete say. Here's a link to how they look installed on my car:

Easy to work with. Can be cut to any length and the kit includes spacers for different size hose/fittings.

I agree with them. Check with Summit racing for the hoses. Might be cheeper.

Yeah don't forget that part about "focusing on college". that's code for "crap I'm poor!"

$100 for a radiator hose is FAR too much for today's budget.

I'll look at summit and see what they have.

Thanks!
Justin

Go to the parts store and take a look at this hose. A lot of twist and bends. I cut a section out of this for my upper. Below are two different p.n. for the same part

A nissan pintara hose is good for range rover style front covers. If you check the archives one of the guys from sidney found one that fits the rover fronts.
failing that , just go into a few shops that sell radiator hoses. Like Jim says, you'll you'll come across a section of one or another that suits

Hi Justin,
Congratulations with your graduation.
I need some info on the FI on your Rover V8. E-mail me

Justin,
I use Dayco #70344 and shorten it. I modified the neck on the thermostat housing with a filler neck so the length is shorter than stock buick 215. I have to shorten the hose. I also tried NAPA 7573. I don't remember exactly but this might be NAPA's version of the same Dayco hose but they wanted $18 but the dayco was $9. Its worth a look.

Kudos, Justin!

You gonna be able to make it to the V8 meet this year?

Go ahead...treat yourself!

This radiator hose actually fits better than the RV8 one and costs $15. Compared to about $60.
Its longer than the RV8 one which suits my application of radiator far forward and engine far back perfectly. infact I had to cut about one inch off the end.

After cutting and shutting several hoses to make the bottom hose for my car, which looked very ugly, I was flabbergasted when my radiator man looked at it and said one thing!

"HQ bottom"

And he was absolutely right. My radiator is 50 mm longer (or lower) than standard (as most V8s are) and this fits perfectly, clearing the steering rack and oil pump easily. If yours is further forward you may need to add a short, straight piece however I cut about 65mm from mine at the bottom.

For the rest of the world, beyond OZ. HQ was a local 1970s GM product sold in the millions. You can probably buy parts on the Moon for them. $7.50 AUD.

My top hose is a different story, but a friend uses a Toyota Hilux which goes around the distributor better than Amway and lines up at the radiator outlet brilliantly.

Peter,
I'm the 'Friend' that Ian Buckley referred to. The top hose that I used is the bottom hose off a Toyota Hilux and the part number is: 16572-71031 and the brand nzme is 'Mackay Silentruba'.

I've found that this is a "trial & error" situation. It all depends on what manifold & thermo housing is used & radiator height will also play a part. I made a posting afew weeks back about using a Ford hose, part # AKM5422. This fitted fine with a modified Rover manifold & an original MGBV8 thermo housing. However, it fouled the fan belt when used on an Offenhauser manifold with the MG housing. Using a straight Ford housing, it JUST cleared the fan belt. The Hot rod shops sell stainless steel covered flexible hoses. They're pricey , I just wondered if anyone has tried one ? Barrie E

I found a molded radiator hose from Kragen, Goodyear P/N 61459 which I was able to modify to fit my engine. I also use an inline filler from Summit to get all of the air out.

With the inline filler did you run a hose to the overflow tank? Can't make it out on your photo.if so do you have 2 hoses to the overflow?

Thanks

Justin, Did you change the top inlet on the Falcon rad to the other side? If not your application will be very different than Simon's. I'm using the Mustang/Falcon rad and pieced together a couple of hoses using a 1-1/2" chome drain pipe as the splicer. Not as ugly as it sounds. I used part of the drain for the bottom hose because of the tight turn it made. Chrome too!

Kelly Combes

Forgot to add, I did change the top inlet on mine to get a cross flow effect. Here's a shot of the bottom.

Kelly Combes

Hi Graham,
I run the overflow hose from the filler, into the expansion tank, I capped off the overflow hose fitting on the radiator. It seems to work pretty well.
Jake

the outlet from my fuel injection points towards the drivers side of my car. I had the inlet and outlet of the radiator switched so the inlet is on the drivers side (US spec) and the outlet is over near my oil pump.

I hate the idea of spending a boat load of money (relative to being a college student) on radiator hoses, but I really like the idea of a long flexible hose that wraps back towards the motor, around the oil pump, between the steering rack and crossmember, and down to the radiator outlet. That seems so much nicer than the mess I have now.

Same applies to the top, flexible hose sounds better every day.
Justin

Hi Justin,
That is exactly what my lower hose does. I first tried one of those universal flex hoses but it collapsed to easily, even with the wire reinforcement inside. I ended up buying two different molded radiator hoses and a couple of hose joiners. I was able to cut both and join them with hose clamps into one curved hose that fits perfectly. It snakes back from the water pump, down and under the steering rack under the oil pump and to the lower radiator port. The only drawback is if you have a small oil pump cover leak like I did. It caused the rubber to swell over 2 years to the point where I felt it needed to be replaced. I can provide pics and hose part numbers if you like. Let me know.
