MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - V8 Brake Options

Hi Everyone,
I brought home a '79 MGB that is actually running, for my conversion. Has anyone uprated the front brakes and what are you using?

Cheers,

Steve

What engine are you planning on using? If the Rover/Buick 215 or variant, why uprate the brakes? The aluminum v8 engine is lighter than the stock 4 cyl, so stopping requirements should be the same, perhaps a little less than the stock engine setup.
I personally modded some Volvo 4 piston calipers and designed and machined an adapter to fit vented rotors to the stock setup, just haven't put it all together. I still havce the stock brakes on mine, they seem to work really well.

Hi Jake,

I plan on using a 4.0L Rover.

Unless you are planning on going racing or lots of autocrossing, stock brakes are all you need. If you really feel you need to upgrade, go to kevlar pads first & see if that is enough before you drop a lot of money.

I have been around this hobby since 1980 & have seen more money wasted on brakes than any where else, myself included.

Some of the fastest SCCA MG racers still run stock brakes with pads specific for the type of racing they are involved in.

I have fitted discs all round, to the front AP racing vented rotor 295mm diameter with my own ally bell, four pistons callipers, to the rear 270mm rotor, ally bell, two pistons callipers, pedal box with balance bar, AP racing MC, I have also brake proportionning valve for the rear and hydraulic handbrake. Good braking.
Regards.

Hi Michel,

Thank you for the pictures, the brakes and MC setup look great! Do you have a parking brake too?

Cheers,

Steve

Yes I have, but I don't use the car to go to the supermarket.

Steve,

Try reading Roger Williams' book 'How to Give your MGB V8 Power' - published by Veloce. This covers brake upgrades. You might find other useful ideas in the book too.

Good luck with your conversion. I've done (Phase 1) of a Rover 3.5 into a 79 BGT but the other phases will take ....

I install a front brake kit from classic conversions
the calipers are wilwood and are only 2.5 lb the car stops great. I am using their big brake rotors.

I put cross-drilled/vented rotors with EBC pads on my 3.5 roadster. So far they stop me when required.

My local Rover specialist tells me that Rover calipers (two-piston) will bolt onto the MGB brackets. May try that one day.
