MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - V8 Exhaust / Muffler Question
Does anybody have an exhaust system they are happy with. I have been running a single pipe system for 5 years and I am trying to find the right sound that is a combination of throaty but mellow with a quiet cruising decibel. I have 2.5" pipe and one 5.0 Mustang Flowmaster muffler with twin tips with resonators. This is still a bit raucous and I want to make it more subtle by adding a resonator or something? Any suggestions? |

Martyn, I've run Hooker Competition or Comp plus mufflers on my cars for years. They have a nice quiet rumble at idle and cruise but have a crisp performance sound when accellerating. I've always ran them on 2 1/2 inch pipes with no resonators. Summit Racing sells them and I think they were about $25 each. TM |

hello martyn i installed a borla turbo muffler on my single pipe exhaust (3.9 rover) and headers purchased thru D & D. nice mellow sound that comes alive when the 4 barrel kicks in. for looks i also installed a borla tip at the end. go to their website www.borla.com and you can hear how it will sound! i would do this setup again. todd |

Martyn, A lot can be writing on exhaust performance contribution to the engine package. Martyn, I would suggest installing a dual exhaust first using 3 chamber flow masters, or any other turbo muffler (All turbo mufflers are glass pack including Borla). Once is install then paint the header pipe with regular paint. Drive the car at normal speed around the block or until the paint ism burnt. You will notice that the paint will burn closer to the engine. The part that does not burn, and maintains color. Right in the area where the burnt paint meets the unburn paint, install a crossover pipe. Crossover must be of the same dia. As your exhaust, this will quiet the exhaust and it will increase torque. If loud, then install a small round glasspak on the crossover pipe. This will quiet down the systems. Borla is experimenting with this addition to quiet down SUV’s. One thing that is important on the sound and performance is the size of the pipe. To big is not always good. Have a performance muffler shop do your exhaust. They should ask what type of engine and performance package you have; cam , et… Then match the exhaust pipe size. Aluminized pipe also is a bit quieter. I hope this helps you. r/Bill |

Bill: What is the significance of where the unburnt paint meets the burnt paint? I have been wondering how to determine the best place for a crossover pipe and found your input interesting. I am trying to find a set of RV8 style headers for my B-GT conversion, do you know of any sources? |

The purpose of using the paint on the pipes is to find the point on the exhaust, where the gases are creating resonances and eddies in the system. This resonance causes a pressure build up and then heat. The burnt paint tells you exactly where the pressure build up is. If you need RV8 headers, you can contact Ted Schumacher http://www.tsimportedautomotive.com/ He has some which are a bit different (supposedly better) than the RV8 style. I think he wants $450 for them. Mike |

Bill...just got back from a week at the coast & am catching up on my "reading"...you never fail to amaze me with your engineering expertise...thanks for the burnt/unburnt paint tip...i'll certainly use it when i do my exhaust.... &, martyn, don't forget to move your fuel tank over to the center of the car to get more room for your right side tail pipe...while you're at it, change the sending unit from the side of the tank to the front...that way, you can get to it if you have to even with the second pipe installed. if you want to see how its done, go to my web site. |
