MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - W/W Axle with Steel Hubs
I have checked the archives and know that I can put Steel hubs on my wire wheel axle. Is this a straight forward bolt-on job or does it require machining? Does it help get more meat under the back? Stainzy |

The former; and yes! |

Yes, it works. On the rear of mine, I replaced the drum retaining bolts with wheel studs from a Datson 240Z, wheels bolted right up after making a spacer ring to center the wheel on the splined hub. I'm running 215/60R14's on the rear with no rubbing. $8.00 for the studs, $13.00 a piece for the aluminum wheels from a junkyard. Done deal. |

Like Sean, I just changed the 4 bolts to studs and bolted mags in place. Has been like that for 21 years and a zillion miles now with no dramas. I run 245 60 14 and only just rub the inner walls on serious angles! I also just machined the splines off the wire hubs and then trimmed them back so they only protrude beyond the mags by about 2 inches. regards mark |

I have heard reports that Rostyle hubs on wire-wheel axles can cause the tyres to rub in the inner part of the arches, much like the other way round causes rubbing on the outer part of the arch. I understand that the factory recessed the shock-absorber mounting bolts at some point to *gain* some clearance, can't see hy they would have bother to do that unless clearance was relatively tight with the *correct* hubs. Thanks guys, Will try the bolts to studs conversion but will check the wheel offset figures before doing so. Don't laugh but I am trying to fit Superlite 15 x 8 with 225/50/15 tyres on the back. Superlite can make any offset between 0 and +15. Will have to mod the inner arches a bit but I'll give it a go. Thanks again Stainzy |

Stainzy - if you can find the info, check to see what the offset of the Datsun 240Z wheels were. They are almost dead center in the wells and fit really nicely. I'll see if I can find a picture to email you. |

Thanks Sean, Great pic. Has convinced me to go down this route. Stainzy |
