MG MGB GT V8 Factory Originals Technical - Weight of the MBG rear end

I have weighed my Jag IRS conversion for rear of my MGB and it came out to about 300 lb.

For comparison can someone with a stripped MGB give me the weights for the axle complete, with leaf-springs and lever arm dampers.

Thanks

Nick

glad to know that I not the only person who goes around weighing things....

I am not really the person to ask about the stock setup as I have been running with rear discs for some time now. My rear axle complete with oil calipers and discs comes in at 167 Lbs I also know that that my disc brake assemby(aluninium axle end cap/caliper bracket, disc and caliper works out at about 14Lbs each side. I also have the old drum and back plate/slave/ lever assembly and that works out at about 22Lbs each side.
My simple maths tells me that if you subtract 2x14 from my assembly and then add 2x22 that should get you the weight of the stock axle assemlby near enough.(=183LBS?)(I suppose that the Quaife diff unit might weigh a bit more than the stock cage but not much.
I'm doing this research for a De dion project that I have been planning for some time. What I keep finding is that most IRS weigh more. I also think that it's important to keep one's mind on the one thing that you can't really change much and which gets heavier on a performance BV8 and that is the wheel/ tyre assembly. My 195/65 NCT3 on 6x14 GB alloy comes in at a whopping 33lbs each wheel/tyre- this adds 66lbs to the axle assembly and is a big percentage of the total weight of the bare axle. It also means that you have to lose a LOT of unsprung mass from the suspension parts before an IRS starts to pay off in performance/£££££ terms over a really well set up live axle assembly.

Hope this helps

My guess would be near 200lbs. I'll drag a scale out to my storage unit in the morning and get some actual weights.

I got the scales out & this is what I found.
A tube axle complete less grease 175lbs.
Shocks,U-bolts & brackets 20lbs.
Springs & shackles 30lbs.
A banjo axle 115lbs.

Thanks Guys

I make that 225lbs for a tube setup, with about 5lbs for the shocks, giving 230lbs total. This gives around a 70lb penalty for the Jag set-up.

Using one shock per side are loosing the cage would save around 25lbs, reducing the difference to 45lbs.

For cost over performance a sorted live axle is the way to go, but ride quality is also a factor in my equation.

Thanks

Sorry Dwight

Didn't read you details right, it should have read.

I make that 225lbs for a tube setup. This gives around a 77lb penalty for the Jag set-up.

Using one shock per side are loosing the cage would save around 25lbs, reducing the difference to around 50lbs.
