Because of work comments I will not be able to attend the V8 show this year. I plan on attending the Twist show on Saturday and if I can squeeze it in I will drive up Friday night. I only live about and hours drive from the show and I can’t break away.

I am in Poland right now and seeing a ton of Fiat .
Jim Miller

Steve, the check is in the mail!!
I have a room booked at the Excel, might even bring 2 cars!
Looking forward to seeing everybody again this year.

Martyn

Counting the days.
I got a room at the Excel hotel, I was told that all of the rooms that were reserve were gone, but they could get a room anyway. did not make any sense, but I got a room. I will be arriving Wed.
Bill Guzman

Sue and I will be driving up Wednesday evening so I can again exhibit my less than even mediocre driving skills at Grattan on Thursday. We will be staying at the Exel. Plan on trailering the car, as there is a better than even chance that it will not be functional after Thursday and I do have to get Sue home by Sunday night. Will still be driving the clunker engine, have not had time to assembly a new one. I will take Ol'Smokey around the parking lot party every hour so we will not have to worry about mosquitos.
Martyn, if you and Carol are coming early to play at Grattan, maybe the girls would like to go antique shopping or something while we are at the track....+ any other spouses/girlfriends who might be less than enthusiastic about sitting at Grattan all day Thursday.
Tom Hoagland may be coming, depending on his work schedule.
P.S. Anyone within a 300 mile radius of Cleveland know of a 14 or 15 foot car hauler trailer for sale(Cheap)
Can't Wait!!!!

Plans have changed. My son is coming home from Iraq on his R&R He is with the First Infantry Division SVC battery. he will be here for two weeks and may be going back the day that I would be living, I want to be here when he returns to Iraq, he is not coming back until June next year.
Anyone in Ca. who want to go to Grand Rapids, I have a tickets and room in Grand Rapids.
I am very Happy that I will be seeing my son on Aug 1 Pending, dates could change.
Bill Guzman

That's a good news/bad news thing, isn't it Bill? Well, family should always come first so you are doing the right thing but we will miss seeing you.

For me, progress has been good. With six days to my deadline I'm down to the wiring harness on the truck and that should be more than enough time, leaving ten days to change head gaskets on the MG. Looks like I should make it but I'll wait to reserve the room just in case.

Jim
Jim Blackwood

Looks like I'll be able to go. I've been self employed since February and it's absolutely brutal from a financial standpoint. I won't put my car on the track or anything but I'll still go and hang with you guys, and show you some of the mods I've done in the last year.

Has any one booked at the Knights Inn its only $40.00 a night? I have not booked yet but the Exel Inn is full. Also while I have you here I came two years ago went home and did my car. At the time I was there I wished tht yhe cars would have some where on the an 8"x11" paper whith some of the following information. Year of the car, the engine used, and a list of all your mods, your name and where you are from. Anybody add to this. I hope I will not be the only one with my paper. The only problem is to do it including me. Thank You Denny

Denny,
I will have a hand out with everyones name and address,
Phone numbers (those that have provided them) and like wise e-mail's. I hope that it will help those that are in progress of building cars, by giving them direct contact with people that have been there.

Now is back to plan B again. My son will arive on the 10 of Aug that is the day I was going to GR.

For now,I am anxious to see my son.

I hope is appropiate.
We started an organization called SOS suppor Our Soldiers, whe shipped lots of different items to the soldiers in Iraq, and we always are looking for help. If you would like to help send me an e-mail.

I'm right on schedule so far. Got the truck to start this evening, though it didn't run very well and will need a good bit of work on tuning. Still, it's a goal achieved. Hopefully I can get it running a little better tomorrow and then it goes out to the carport and I can start on the MG. Almost 2 weeks to change the head gaskets should be way more than enough time.

Jim

Steve

Can't understand it. Almost every year something goes wrong with the car the day before we leave for the Meet. This year is different. The clutch blew a whole 12 days before we head out. Easy diagnosis when you take the bottom cover off the bellhousing and 2/3 of the disc facing is lying on the bottom. Fortunately I can have the trans out in about 35 minutes, and don't have to pull the bellhousing to change the clutch....one of the blessings of the OEM 215 bellhousing. Mr. New Clutch, Sue and I will see you all in a few days!

Hello, I have been to many of Twists parties either in an MGB or MGA. I have always wanted a V8 and finally bought one yesterday. I have a room at the Excell Inn and plan to drive the V8. Could someone fill me in about registration, are you referring to Twist's party or is the BV8's having a function as well? I would like to be involved. Thanks so much, my email is dsburstyn@sympatico.ca. Look forward to seeing you there.

Dave B.
David Burstyn

Oh it's a separate party alright. Should be registration info further down this thread.

Well the truck is out of the lab and the floor's mopped and clean. Tomorrow the B gets rolled out of the 'office' and into the service bay. The head gasket replacement shouldn't prove too much of a challenge, and I hope I can get the tranny out without pulling the engine so that I can replace that blown freeze plug. More later.

Jim

Incidentally, my initial reaction to the MegaSquirt EFI controller is that it works well and should be easy to tune. Just in case anyone was interested.

Dave,
Check with the Windsor-Detroit MG Car Club bunch, I believe there's a convoy being arranged by Dale Brown for Thursday. Not sure of specific details yet, but will pass on when they become known. If timing works out, I'll be travelling with this group.

Update: I pulled the heads this evening and everything looks really great. Apparently the head gaskets compressed, letting the head bolts get a bit loose and causing the gasket to leak. More in a day or two. :-)

Sorry to have to say this, but there have been complications. The bottom line is that I won't make it to the show. And worse yet, due to the fact that the show is on the weekend of my wife's birthday I had made a prior committment to devote that weekend next summer to her and so will most likely not make the show next summer either. I really hate to do this after all the help you guys have given me and the sense of community that has built up, but I would have to cut corners pretty severely at this point to make it and I just can't justify it. I do feel I owe a bit more of an explanantion than "sorry, can't make it" though. So here's what happened. As I was prepping the second head install I noticed that the copper gasket was marked but not drilled for the oil passage that feeds the rocker shaft. This is what rushing does for you, now the first head had to come back off. Drilling the second gasket and completing the install, two of the last three head bolts pulled their threads out of the block just as they reached torque. Both heads now have to come off. The gasket cement is proving to be quite tenacious which is a very good thing, but with 6 more surfaces to clean it will be a full day's work. So realistically I have about 3 full days of work ahead of me, if I cut a couple of corners. But I'm not going to do that. If the threads in the block are rotten enough that four of them would pull out, I'd be well advised to heli-coil them all. Especially considering the gradual way several of them reached torque and the extra stress of the blower. It also gives me one more chance to reconsider touching up the valve seats, and considering the looks of one seat in particular I think I will do it. Plus an additional chance to consider changing to a cam more suitable for use with a blower, and I think I'll do that as well. All of which means the car will not be ready for a couple more weeks.
Sorry guys, I'm really going to miss all of you. But I think it's the best course of action.

Jim
Jim Blackwood

Jim,

Bummer that you won't be joining us again. :(

Good news for ya. Next year's V8 Show is in June!

I feel your pain, though. I stripped the some threads on the 3.9 I was building. Used ARP head studs and wiped out one right before I got to 55ft/lbs. I didn't realize this was such a problem. The old, sloooow 215 stays in. Now, if I can just get the windshield in.....

Carl

Carl,

When are you leaving? Maybe we can caravan up again this year. I'll be driving my Toyota one more time, so I may have room to haul some stuff for you if you need it (I'll be bringing up 10 of my wiring kits, so space is somewhat limited).
Dan Masters

Steve Carrick-

Closing on a house early Friday afternoon in Lake Orion (that's where I'm closing, the house is in Groveland) so I won't get out of town and over Grand Rapids until ypu guys are on the moonlight cruise to Lake MI. Can you pm a cell number so I can catch up with you when I get into GR? I'm staying at the Hotel Excel.

Thanks

Dang Jim that stinks. :( My car reminded me that it likes to have a once annual meltdown. My intake pan gasket cracked yesterday (don't ask me how) and started shooting oil all over the place. I disconnected the fuel injection and removed the intake manifold, and to my amazement, the engine was exceptionally clean inside! No black sludge or anything floating in there. That made me happy! I'm replacing a pushrod while I'm there (the infamous pushrod from last years V8 convention) so it's gonna take me an extra day to get it all back together. I should have it done on Tuesday night or Wednesday morning, and hopefully to the show on Thursday!

Better to crack here than on the road!
Justin
Justin

Hello All!
This Sunday morning I was ready to call it quits with the MG and just drive the Voyager up, missing the track time. Reason?...I was once again standing along the highway with an inoperable MG. After being extremely faithful for a lot of years, she has decided to become a big disappointment. (Gee....that sounds like a few of the wives too!) Saturday night I had repaced the clutch which had disintegrated a few days before and had her out on I90 to check out the repair. Hit a large bump on a construction site and the engine quit. No ingition spark at all. Got home, got the new never used trailer and went to retreive the car. Found that the trailer ramps were too short and the resulting angle was too short to allow the spoiler clearance. Had to build up the ramp height and extend the ramps with stones from a nearby stream. A couple of hours of diagnostics found that the power wire to the MSD unit had bounced against a sharp edge in an inaccessable place and been severed. So will be bringing her up afterall, although on the trailer so I don't have to worry about track-induced (more likely drive-induced) failures.
Jim....Really sorry to hear you will not be bringing the MG, BUT why not come up in a civilian car? Admittedly not as much fun, but all the friends are there + you always pick up new ideas.
We are heading out about 4:30 Wednesday afternoon. ETA Grand Rapids 10:30. (Will be building longer ramps tonight to replace the milk crate full of stones.)See y'all (Carl, is the 'in the right place in y'all?)in a couple of days.
Kurt
P.S.Talked to Glen yesterday, he plans on attending as does Ralph Vrana. Anyone heard from Bill Yobi lately?
Kurt Schley

Kurt,

You have to be born in the South to say that. ;) BTW, in my local British car club, civilian cars are called SOBs (some other brand).
Carl

Carl,
June it is then! Interesting to learn the Rover blocks have the same trouble, I had been toying with the thought of a Rover based engine in the future but perhaps not.

Kurt, as much as I'd like to see everyone, I've already altered the schedule and will be putting a dozer engine together instead at Dad's house. Not as much fun as running around in a V8-MG, but something that has to be done. See you in June though.

GREG - 616-889-9707 I'm not sure what time the cruise will get back to the hotel. I'll be at the hotel the entire day

STEVE
STEVE CARRICK

I am in Grand Rapids, having returned from a pre-rallye run of the checkpoints for the Grand Lake Tour.

I drove up to Michigan on Sunday nite, after spending the day at the Brickyard 400 in Indianapolis.

I left home in the MGC about 8:30pm...and mad it to about 10 miles south of the intersection of US 41 and SR 2 in Indiana before trouble hit.

I cut a tire on the right rear. no damage to the rim or bodywork. Emptied the boot, got the spare and the jack. Got the car jacked up and was about to remove the damaged tire when the jack tube broke and the car went back down. (At least the tire was still on the car!) The jack made a nice scrape up the passenger door as it escaped from the jack tube.

I went back to the boot to get the scissors jack...at which point I discovered was still in the MGBZ...back home.

Called AAA...after visits from one State Police car (no assistance offered) and one Sheriff car (no assistance offered, but wanted to see my license.)

Back on the road about 1:30am EDT and arrived in Grand Rapids about 3:45am EDT.

Now have an MGC with 3 minilytes and one wire wheel.

Sigh.

rick
rick ingram

Thanks Steve

I prbably won't get to the hotel until 6:00 Friday night or so. I'll be driving the Bronco (all the MG stuff is still in California), so the only thing I'll miss is company.

greg fast

Gees Rick.....if it weren't for bad luck, you'd have no luck at all. Could it be that the jack was stressed by the additional weight of beer in the trunk?
I'll be arriving tomorrow and we'll commiserate with one of the aforementioned beverages.
Graham Creswick

It's Wednesday evening....

Steve (Barney) Carrick is here (and I LIKE what he's done to Barney!)

Pete Mantell, Bernie Posey, Robert Milner, Dan Masters, Ted Lathrop are a few of the V*ers I've seen tonight.

Tomorrow is track day at Gratten...I'm sure that there will be some late evening/early Thursday morning arrivals!

Cheers!

Well, I got the intake all back together. The gasket is holding, and I think I've come darn close to curing most of my oil leaks, so I'm going to leave good enough alone. I am, however, fighting with my starter. I think it's starting to go bad on me, but we're going to try and hobble it to the event. Worst case scenario: I install a new gear reduction starter at the show.

Nothing like an ad lib tech session!

Unfortunately I won't be able to make it to the show this year. I've had to cancel the trip at the last minute. I was really looking forward to taking a closer look at the 302 powered Bs. I'm going miss all you guys.
